“And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye,
but do not consider the plank in your own eye?”
Matthew 7:3 NKJV

We live in a world that trains us to react fast.

One post. One outfit. One comment. One clip out of context. And suddenly everybody becomes a judge with a gavel in one hand and a phone in the other.

Jesus cuts right through that habit.

He says we are very skilled at spotting the “speck” in someone else’s eye while completely ignoring the “plank” in our own. That is not just a funny picture. It is a serious warning. We often see other people’s sins more clearly than our own. We notice their attitude, their choices, their flaws, their tone. Meanwhile, pride, envy, harshness, and hypocrisy can sit in our own hearts like unwanted furniture we have learned to walk around.

Jesus is not saying that discernment is wrong. He is saying that judgment must begin with you.

Real spiritual maturity does not start with calling everybody else out. It starts with letting God search you. It starts with the uncomfortable prayer: “Lord, show me what is crooked in me before I go correcting someone else.” That kind of self-reflection is rare, especially online. Social media usually rewards quick opinions, not quiet repentance.

But Jesus is after something better.

He wants truth in us, not just truth from us. He wants humble people, not just loud people. And when He exposes what is in our hearts, He is not being cruel. He is being kind. Christ does not reveal our sin to crush us, but to cleanse us. He corrects us because He loves us.

The cross reminds us that we are not the standard. Jesus is. That takes the swagger out of us in a hurry. It also gives us hope, because the same Savior who tells us to remove the plank is the One who forgives sinners and changes them from the inside out.

So before you post, assume, mock, or make a snap judgment, stop and check the mirror first.

A humble heart sees more clearly.

Pray This

Lord Jesus, help me be honest about my own heart before I rush to judge someone else. Give me humility, clear vision, and a spirit that is quick to repent and slow to condemn. Amen.
