God First Always

God First Always

“Now therefore, thus says the Lord of hosts, ‘Consider your ways! You have sown much, but harvest little; you eat, but there is not enough to be satisfied; you drink, but there is not enough to become drunk; you put on clothing, but no one is warm enough; and he who earns, earns wages to put into a purse with holes.’”
Haggai 1:5-6 (NASB1995)

A long time ago, the people in Israel were working very hard, but it seemed like nothing was going right. They were planting seeds but growing only a little food. They ate, but they were still hungry. They made money, but it felt like their money disappeared, like putting it in a bag with holes. This paints a vivid picture of how life feels when we try to do everything on our own, without turning to God for guidance and provision.

God sent a prophet named Haggai to explain what was going on. Haggai told them they were forgetting something very important: God. While they were busy building their houses and taking care of their own needs, they forgot to rebuild God’s temple, His special house. This neglect showed that they were putting their desires above their relationship with God, and it was costing them more than they realized.

God wanted them to think about their choices. He wanted them to see that everything they had came from Him, and He was the One who could truly make them happy. So, God reminded them through Haggai to focus on Him first. It was a wake-up call for the people, showing them that prioritizing God wasn’t just about obedience but also about aligning their lives with His blessings and purpose.

Even when the people weren’t doing what God wanted, He still loved them. He wanted to help them get back on track. Some of them listened to Haggai and decided to put God first again. They started working together to rebuild God’s house, and that brought them closer to Him. Their obedience not only restored their relationship with God but also brought unity and hope to their community.

This story reminds us that God cares about us all the time, whether we’re doing well or struggling. He wants us to trust Him and make Him the most important part of our lives. Sometimes, we need to pause and reflect, just as the Israelites were asked to consider their ways, so we can recognize areas where we might be drifting away from God.

God showed how much He loves us by sending Jesus, His Son. Jesus gave His life so we can be close to God forever. When we remember what Jesus did for us, it helps us want to follow Him and live the way He teaches us. His sacrifice is the ultimate reminder of how much God values a relationship with us, and how far He is willing to go to bring us back to Him.

Just like the people in Haggai’s time, we can choose to put God first in everything we do. When we do, we’ll feel the joy and peace that come from living close to Him. Trusting God with our priorities is the key to experiencing the fullness of His blessings and the purpose He has for our lives.
