“You love him even though you have never seen him. Though you do not see him now, you trust him; and you rejoice with a glorious, inexpressible joy.”
1 Peter 1:8 NLT
As we get older, relationships begin to stretch across time.
There are people we once saw every week who now live several states away. Some friends disappear into busy lives, grandchildren, doctor appointments, work schedules, and long quiet seasons. Then one afternoon you scroll past an old photo or an Instagram post, and suddenly you smile without even thinking about it.
The love was still there.
You may not have spoken in years. You may not know every detail of their current life. But something inside you still moves with affection because real love does not require constant visibility to remain alive.
Peter says something remarkable about Jesus. He tells believers, “You love him even though you have never seen him.”
That is Christianity in a sentence.
We love a Savior our eyes have never physically looked upon. We trust hands we have never literally touched. Yet somehow, through the Word of God and the work of the Holy Spirit, Christ becomes deeply personal to us.
The older I get, the more I understand this verse.
Love can exist quietly.
Not loudly. Not dramatically. Not with daily interaction or constant emotional intensity. Sometimes love simply rests in the heart, steady and present. Like an old photograph tucked safely in a drawer, it may not always sit in front of your face, but it still matters deeply when you see it again.
Our relationship with Jesus can feel like that at times.
There are seasons when emotions run high and closeness feels obvious. Then there are ordinary days filled with errands, medications, aching knees, traffic lights, and laundry baskets that somehow multiply like rabbits overnight. Yet underneath all of it, true faith continues trusting Christ even when feelings are quieter than before.
Peter says believers “rejoice with a glorious, inexpressible joy.” That joy is not built on sight. It is built on trust.
One day, faith will become sight. One day we will see Christ face to face. But until then, Christians continue loving the Savior they have not seen because His love first reached them.
And maybe that quiet, enduring love is more beautiful than we realize.
Pray This
Lord Jesus, thank You for teaching me that real love does not disappear simply because I cannot see with my eyes. Help me continue trusting You in every season of life, especially in quiet and ordinary days. Strengthen my faith, deepen my affection for You, and remind me that one day I will see You face to face. Until then, keep my heart steady in love and full of hope. Amen.
