The Holy Spirit – God’s Seal of Our Eternal Home
The assurance of an eternal home is a profound truth that provides hope and comfort to believers. In 2 Corinthians 5, the apostle Paul beautifully illustrates this concept, likening our bodies to temporary houses awaiting the grander dwelling Jesus is preparing for us. As we delve into this passage, we will discover how the Holy Spirit serves as our down payment, assuring us that we will live forever with Him in His home.
Our Temporary Dwelling
In 2 Corinthians 5, Paul compares our bodies to a house that gradually deteriorates over time. Much like an aging structure, our earthly bodies face the effects of sin and decay. Yet, Paul reminds us that this is not our final destination. We are destined for something far greater, a newer and permanent house that God has prepared for us.
“For we know that if the earthly tent which is our house is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.” – 2 Corinthians 5:1 (NASB1995)
The Promise of a New Home
Beyond this temporal dwelling, God has constructed a magnificent eternal home, tailor-made for each of His children. Though it stands ready, we are not yet able to move in. However, the Lord has not left us without assurance. He has given us a down payment, a promise that our eternal home is secure.
“But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.” – Hebrews 11:16 (NASB1995)
The Down Payment: The Holy Spirit
Jesus, in His infinite wisdom, knew the importance of His departure from this world. By leaving, He could send the Holy Spirit to us. The Holy Spirit becomes our constant companion, providing everything we need to navigate life’s challenges until we can finally dwell in our heavenly abode.
“When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me.” – John 15:26 (NASB1995)
Receiving the Down Payment
The down payment is available to all who call upon the name of Jesus and believe in Him. As the Bible declares, “whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:13 NASB1995). When we genuinely place our trust in Jesus and acknowledge Him as our Savior, He sends the Holy Spirit to dwell within us, securing our place in God’s eternal home.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.” – Ephesians 2:8-9 (NASB1995)
Applying the Promise
- Embrace the Gift: Acknowledge Jesus as your Lord and Savior and receive the Holy Spirit as a down payment for your eternal home.
“But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.” – John 1:12 (NASB1995)
- Cultivate a Relationship: Develop a personal and intimate relationship with the Holy Spirit through prayer, study of God’s Word, and listening to His guidance.
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.” – John 14:26 (NASB1995)
- Walk in the Spirit: Surrender to the Holy Spirit’s leading and allow Him to transform you from within, producing the fruits of the Spirit in your life (Galatians 5:22-23 NASB1995).
“But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.” – Galatians 5:16 (NASB1995)
- Share the Good News: Share the Gospel with others, so they too can experience the assurance of an eternal home through the Holy Spirit.
“And He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.'” – Mark 16:15 (NASB1995)
