Walking Through the Storm with Jesus

Walking Through the Storm with Jesus

“Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”.’”
Matthew 14:31 (NASB1995)

When the wind blows hard, it can make us feel scared or unsure. Sometimes, the sky is clear, the sun is shining, and we might go outside, but there’s something about the wind that makes us cautious. It’s a reminder of how quickly things can change. If a storm is coming, we get ready and make sure we’re safe. If a big storm like a hurricane or tornado hits, we know it’s time to take cover and be prepared. And yet, even in the midst of preparing, there’s always a moment where we wonder if we’ll make it through.

When I think about storms, I remember two people from the Bible: Jonah and Peter.

Jonah was someone who thought he had everything figured out. But when God asked him to do something big and scary, like telling a whole group of people to change their ways, Jonah didn’t want to do it. He ran in the opposite direction, hoping to escape God’s plan. Sometimes, like Jonah, we run from God’s plan because we’re scared or don’t want to listen. But God never gives up on us. He calls us back, just like He called Jonah, and helps us understand His will in a new way. Even when we’ve made mistakes or strayed far, God’s grace pulls us back on track, often through storms that teach us to trust Him.

Then there’s Peter. One night, he was in a boat with his friends when they saw something strange walking on the water. It looked like a ghost! But then they realized it was Jesus. Peter, being brave but a little unsure, asked Jesus if he could walk to Him on the water. Jesus said, “Come!” Peter stepped out of the boat, but when he looked around and saw the big waves, he got scared and started to sink. Jesus grabbed him and said, “Why did you doubt?” The storm wasn’t the problem—Peter’s focus was.

Like Peter, I sometimes ask God to help me grow in my faith and go to new places, but when things get hard, I feel scared. It’s easy to forget to keep my eyes on Jesus when things are tough. The waves of fear and doubt can feel overwhelming, but even when I doubt, He is always there to help me and remind me to trust Him. His hand is always outstretched, ready to catch us when we fall.

Sometimes, like Jonah and Peter, we can be afraid or unsure. We want to do things our way or try to figure it all out by ourselves. But God wants to guide us. He is the Captain of our lives, and when we trust Him, He is the one who can calm the storms and help us through them. In every storm, whether it’s of our own making or something we never expected, Jesus is always near, walking with us and holding us up.
