“For when we place our faith in Christ Jesus, there is no benefit in being circumcised or being uncircumcised. What is important is faith expressing itself in love.”
Galatians 5:6 NLT
There is a kind of religious devotion that looks impressive from across the room. It keeps the rules, says the right things, and knows how to look serious at the right moment. But Paul walks right past all that polished effort and says something bracing: what matters is faith expressing itself in love.
That would have landed hard in Galatia. Circumcision was not a small issue. It had become a way of measuring who was truly in and who was not. Paul does not say obedience is meaningless. He says external markers cannot do the saving work that only Christ can do.
Honestly, religious people can still miss this by a mile. We can take devotion further than God intended and end up building a little trophy case for our own righteousness. At that point, even good practices can become a costume. They may look holy, but they are not the same thing as a heart that trusts Jesus.
God has always been after more than outward religion. He wants the heart. Scripture speaks of the deeper need for circumcision of the heart, not just the body. The problem is not that people care about holiness too much. The problem is that we often settle for visible religion while avoiding the inward surrender God requires.
Jesus came for that inward work. He does not just trim the branches. He deals with the root. By faith in Him, we are made right with God, and that faith starts showing up in love. Not fake niceness. Not religious performance with a smile stapled to it. Real love. Humble love. Patient love. Costly love.
So if you have been leaning on your discipline, your standards, or your religious track record, let Galatians 5:6 search you a little. The question is not whether you appear devoted. The question is whether your faith in Christ is alive enough to move your heart toward love.
That is the kind of faith God delights in.
Pray This
Lord Jesus, save me from trusting in outward religion. Give me a heart that truly rests in You and shows that faith through love. Amen.
