“Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children;”
Ephesians 5:1 NASB
Christian growth can feel a little intimidating at first. You read a verse like this and think, Imitate God? That seems a touch above my pay grade.
But Paul does not say this to crush believers. He says it to beloved children.
That matters.
There is a difference between mocking someone by imitating them and learning by imitation. One is careless and disrespectful. The other is how children grow. A little boy sees his dad carry groceries, so he grabs one tiny bag and waddles to the kitchen like he is holding the whole family together. He does not fully understand strength yet. He is learning it by watching and doing.
That is closer to what this verse means.
God is not calling His people to put on a performance. He is calling His children to grow in family likeness. We watch Him in His Word. We see His holiness, His mercy, His patience, His truth. And then, however imperfectly at first, we begin to walk in those same directions.
Imitation does not mean you already know everything before you begin. It means you watch, and then do. You stumble, and then do it again. Christian maturity is not instant. It is learned obedience shaped over time by grace.
And this is where Jesus stands at the center of it all. We do not guess what God is like. We look at Christ. In Jesus we see the kindness of God, the purity of God, the truth of God, and the love of God in human flesh. He does not merely tell us to imitate from a distance. He saves us, brings us near, and teaches us how sons and daughters live.
So if you are a new believer, do not panic because you do not look fully grown yet. Babies are not expected to shave and pay taxes. Children learn by staying close to their Father.
Stay near Christ. Watch Him. Follow Him. That is how growth happens.
Pray This
Lord, thank You for making me Your child through Jesus Christ. Teach me to watch You closely, trust You deeply, and grow in the way I live. Amen.
