“In this way, Jehu destroyed every trace of Baal worship from Israel. He did not, however, destroy the gold calves at Bethel and Dan, with which Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to sin.”

Jehu is one of the more surprising figures in the Old Testament. God used him to bring judgment on the house of Ahab and to wipe out Baal worship from Israel. On the surface, it looks like a great spiritual victory.

But then comes a troubling detail.

Jehu destroyed the idols of Baal, yet he left standing the golden calves at Bethel and Dan.

Why?

The answer seems less theological and more practical. The golden calves had become part of the political and cultural structure of the northern kingdom. Removing them would have disrupted the religious system that helped keep the nation united and the king’s influence secure. Jehu was willing to remove the idols he hated, but not the idols that benefited him.

Before we shake our heads at Jehu, we should pause for a moment.

It is often easier to condemn sins we do not struggle with than to surrender the ones we secretly cherish. We may speak strongly against certain evils while protecting attitudes, habits, ambitions, comforts, or fears that compete with God’s rightful place in our hearts.

Jehu reminds us that partial obedience is still disobedience.

The human heart has a remarkable ability to tear down one idol while polishing another. We can remove the obvious statues and still keep the golden calves hidden in the back room.

This is why we need more than self-improvement. We need Jesus Christ. He does not merely call us to remove a few bad habits. He calls us to follow Him completely. Through His death and resurrection, He provides both forgiveness for our divided hearts and the power to change them.

The question is not whether we have destroyed some idols. The question is whether there are still a few calves we have decided to keep.

Ask the Lord to search your heart today. Whatever He puts His finger on, trust Him enough to surrender it. The safest place for your heart is not beside a cherished idol but at the feet of Jesus.

Lord Jesus, search my heart and reveal anything I have placed above You. Help me not to settle for partial obedience or selective repentance. Give me the courage to surrender every area of my life to Your lordship. Thank You for Your forgiveness, Your patience, and Your power to change me. Amen.
