“He spoke, and the winds rose, stirring up the waves. Their ships were tossed to the heavens and plunged again to the depths; the sailors cringed in terror. They reeled and staggered like drunkards and were at their wits’ end. ‘Lord, help!’ they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.” Psalm 107:25-28 NLT

There is a phrase in this passage that stands out: “they were at their wits’ end.”

Most of us know what that feels like.

Sometimes the storm is financial. Sometimes it is physical. Sometimes it is a relationship that seems beyond repair. We try every solution we can think of, gather advice, make plans, and work harder. Then we discover what those sailors learned long ago: some storms are bigger than us.

Notice that the storm was not outside of God’s control. The psalm says He spoke and the winds rose. The God who rules the sea was never threatened by the waves. What terrified the sailors was completely under His authority.

When their strength failed, they finally cried out, “Lord, help!” It was not a polished prayer. It was not long or impressive. It was a desperate plea from people who knew they could not save themselves.

God heard them.

This passage points us forward to Jesus and the day His disciples found themselves in a violent storm on the Sea of Galilee. Experienced fishermen feared for their lives while Jesus slept in the boat. When they woke Him, He simply spoke, and the wind and waves became calm.

The disciples asked, “Who is this man?” Psalm 107 gives the answer. The One who calms the sea is the Lord Himself. Jesus did not merely understand the storm. He ruled over it.

That does not mean every storm ends immediately. Sometimes God calms the storm around us. Sometimes He calms the fear within us. But in either case, His presence is greater than our panic.

If you feel tossed between the heights and depths today, don’t wait until you have the perfect prayer. Bring your need to Jesus. The Savior who commanded the wind and waves still hears the cries of His people.

And He is never overwhelmed by the storm that overwhelms you.

Pray This

Lord Jesus, there are moments when I feel overwhelmed by circumstances I cannot control. Thank You that nothing is beyond Your power and nothing escapes Your care. Teach me to turn to You first instead of relying only on my own strength. Give me peace in the middle of the storm and faith to trust You even when the waves are high. Amen.
