“But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.” Hebrews 5:14 NASB1995
You’ve probably heard the saying, “Practice makes perfect.” There is some truth in that, but a better saying might be, “Practice makes permanent.”
What we repeatedly do eventually shapes who we become.
The writer of Hebrews says that mature believers are those who have their senses “trained” to discern good and evil. Notice that maturity is connected to practice. Spiritual discernment is not something that appears overnight. It is developed through daily exposure to God’s truth and daily obedience to what He says.
In the same way that a musician practices scales or an athlete trains muscles, Christians grow through repeated habits of faith. We read Scripture when we feel like it and when we don’t. We pray when answers seem close and when heaven feels silent. We obey God in small decisions long before we face the big ones.
Over time, those practices train our spiritual senses.
Many believers want discernment, but discernment grows where God’s Word is regularly planted. The more we immerse ourselves in Scripture, the more we begin to recognize God’s wisdom. We learn to distinguish truth from error, wisdom from foolishness, and God’s voice from the noise of the world.
Even more, God’s Word prepares us to influence others. As we faithfully practice what He teaches, we become people who can encourage our children, teach younger believers, and help a new generation understand what God has said.
The stable Christian life is rarely built on dramatic moments. It is usually built on thousands of quiet decisions to trust, obey, read, pray, and follow Jesus.
So don’t underestimate today’s small act of faithfulness. Every time you open God’s Word, every time you choose obedience, and every time you follow Christ in the ordinary moments of life, God is training your heart.
Practice His ways long enough, and you will discover that He is not only changing your habits. He is changing you.
Pray This
Father, thank You for Your Word that trains and strengthens us. Help me to be faithful in the daily habits that lead to spiritual maturity. Give me discernment to recognize good and evil, wisdom to follow Your truth, and perseverance to keep growing when progress feels slow. Shape my life through the practice of obedience and make me a faithful witness to the next generation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
