“Until the time came to fulfill his dreams, the Lord tested Joseph’s character.”
Psalm 105:19 NLT
Joseph received a dream from God when he was still young. That part is exciting. What came next was not.
Before the dream came true, Joseph went through betrayal, slavery, false accusation, and prison. That is not usually the part people put on the coffee mug. But Psalm 105:19 helps us see that those years were not wasted years. The Lord was testing Joseph’s character.
That means the delay had purpose.
Joseph was not just waiting for the dream to happen. God was preparing the man who would be able to carry it. A teenager may receive a glimpse of the future, but it takes time for godly character to grow roots. The dream came early. The strength to handle it came later.
That lands close to home for a lot of us. We want God to move now, answer now, open the door now. Meanwhile, the Lord may be doing deeper work than we can see. He is not only interested in getting you to the promise. He cares about who you are becoming on the way there.
Sometimes we think delay means denial. But sometimes delay means training.
Joseph eventually saw both his own dreams and Pharaoh’s dream come to pass, but by then he had been humbled, sharpened, and taught to depend on God. The pit, the house, and the prison were all part of the road. None of it was random.
And this is where we look to Jesus. He did not take shortcuts around suffering. He trusted the Father fully, walked in perfect obedience, and was proven faithful through every trial. Because of Him, our testing is not pointless. In Christ, God uses even hard seasons to make us more steady, more humble, and more fit for what He has called us to do.
So do not despise the season that feels slow. God may be building character strong enough to hold the very thing you have been praying for.
Stay faithful. The Lord knows how to fulfill His word, and He knows how to prepare His people.
Pray This
Lord, help me trust You in the waiting. Build godly character in me, and make me faithful before the promise arrives. In Jesus’ name, amen.
