“And now I am about to go the way of all the earth, and you know in your hearts and souls, all of you, that not one word has failed of all the good things that the Lord your God promised concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one of them has failed.”
Joshua 23:14 ESV

Hard news from a doctor can make a room feel small in a hurry. One sentence about getting your affairs in order can rattle even a strong Christian. Death has a way of making everything suddenly loud. Regrets get louder. Fears get louder. Even the ticking clock seems to start preaching.

Joshua knew he was dying. He did not pretend otherwise. He did not speak like a man floating above reality. He spoke like a saint with his feet still on the ground. “I am about to go the way of all the earth.” That is honest. Plain. Unadorned. But then he says something stronger than death itself: not one word of the Lord had failed.

That is where peace begins. Not in pretending death is easy. Not in acting brave for everybody else. Peace begins in remembering who God has been.

Joshua looked back over his life and saw a steady pattern. God had kept His word. Through battles, delays, wilderness years, leadership burdens, and the ordinary wear and tear of being human, the Lord had not failed him. And now, standing near death, Joshua did not suddenly switch conclusions. He trusted the same faithful God at the edge of life that he trusted in the middle of it.

That matters for you too.

When your body feels weaker than your faith, Christ is still faithful. When fear comes in waves at 2 a.m., Christ is still faithful. When you do not know how many days remain, Christ is still the risen Savior who has gone through death and come out the other side in victory.

Joshua could say God had not failed. How much more can the Christian say it, knowing Jesus Christ has died for our sins, risen from the grave, and secured eternal life for all who trust in Him? Death is still an enemy. Scripture never treats it like a cute little inconvenience. But for the believer, it is a defeated enemy. It does not get the final word. Jesus does.

So when the road in front of you feels short and frightening, do what Joshua did. Look back and remember the faithfulness of God. Then look to Christ and remember that the One who kept you will not misplace you now. He will not fail you at the very end. Not one promise in Him will fall to the ground.

Rest there. Even here. Especially here.

Pray This

Lord, when fear rises and death feels near, steady my heart with Your faithfulness. Help me remember that not one of Your promises has failed. Thank You for Jesus, who has conquered death and opened the way to everlasting life. Keep me resting in Him, all the way home. Amen.
