Worship in the Numbers

Worship in the Numbers

His offering was 1 silver plate weighing 130 shekels and 1 silver sprinkling bowl weighing 70 shekels… 1 gold dish weighing 10 shekels, filled with incense; 1 young bull, 1 ram and 1 male lamb…1 male goat…and 2 oxen, 5 rams, 5 male goats and 5 male lambs…

Numbers 7:13-17

The book of Numbers can feel repetitive—like it’s saying the same thing over and over. In chapter 9, for example, God tells each leader of Israel’s 12 tribes to bring the exact same offering: silver bowls, fine flour, incense, and several animals. Then He repeats those instructions 12 times! Reading it, I wondered, “Why is this repeated so much? Why not just say it once?”

That’s when I realized something important: the repetition wasn’t just about following directions. It was about helping the people remember and honor what God asked of them. Back then, people didn’t have books or apps to look things up. Most of God’s Word had to be learned by hearing it out loud. By repeating these details, God made sure they stuck in people’s minds and hearts.

This passage also shows us something about how God connects with His people. Each tribe brought the same offering, but each offering was presented separately and recorded in detail. It’s like God was saying, “I see you. Your offering matters to Me.” Even though the gifts were identical, God honored every tribe’s obedience as if it were unique.

When we read Numbers, the repetition might seem tedious, but it reminds us of something powerful. God cares deeply about the details of how we worship Him. He didn’t just give the Israelites rules to follow; He gave them a way to connect with Him after generations of being separated in slavery.

So, the next time you come across a part of the Bible that feels repetitive or unimportant, remember that God never wastes words. Every verse, even in Numbers, teaches us something about who He is and how much He loves us.
