“I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 3:14 NKJV
Some people hear words like press, goal, and prize and immediately think of runners, sweat, whistles, and the smell of a gym they have no desire to visit. Fair enough. Not everybody is built for track shoes and protein shakes.
But Paul is talking about something deeper than athletic ability. He is talking about direction. Effort. Focus. The kind of life that refuses to drift.
Everybody wants to win at something. The trouble is, people define the prize differently. For some, winning looks like money. For others, reputation. For some, it is comfort, control, or finally getting everyone to think they were right all along. That last one is an exhausting sport, by the way.
Paul had already learned that the prize is not found in collecting earthly trophies. It is not about applause, status, or proving yourself better than the next person. The prize is the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. In other words, the real win is not merely doing better in life. The real win is being called upward into fuller fellowship, deeper obedience, and final joy in Christ.
That changes everything.
Following Jesus is not a race where you compete against other believers. It is not about looking more polished, more gifted, or more “successful” than the person in the next pew. The race is about pressing on toward the One who saved you. Christ has already secured your acceptance by His blood and righteousness. You are not running to make God love you. You are running because, in Christ, He already does.
And the prize is not small.
The prize is knowing Christ more deeply now and seeing Him fully at the end. It is growing into holiness. It is finishing with faith. It is hearing, in the end, that your life was not wasted on things that could not last.
So press on.
Even if you feel slow. Even if you are tired. Even if you are not “athletic” in any sense of the word. This race is not won by flashy starts, but by steady faith fixed on Jesus. Keep going. The call is upward, the road is worth it, and the prize is better than anything this world hands out.
Pray This
Lord, keep my heart from chasing small prizes. Teach me to press on toward Christ with joy, endurance, and faith. Help me to live for what lasts. Amen.
