Identifying True Believers: Lessons from 1 John 5:1-4

In his letter to the early believers, John sought to bring assurance amidst growing confusion regarding who is truly a child of God. As differing viewpoints emerged within the churches, John emphasized the importance of recognizing genuine believers. Through 1 John 5:1-4, we gain valuable insights into the characteristics of God’s children and the victory they possess through their faith.

The Basis of Belief

“Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and whoever loves the Father loves the child born of Him.” 1 John 5:1 (NASB1995)

John establishes a foundational truth: whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and those who love the Father also love the child born of Him. Genuine belief in Jesus as the Savior identifies one as a child of God. The Father’s love for the Son is extended to those who believe, bringing them into the family of God.

Believing in Jesus Christ as the Son of God and the Messiah is not merely an intellectual acknowledgment but a transformative experience. It is through this belief that we are born of God and receive the privilege of being called His children. This truth provides a solid foundation for our faith and gives us the assurance of our identity as children of God.

Love and Obedience

“By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and observe His commandments.  For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome.” 1 John 5:2-3 (NASB1995)

Love and obedience are inseparable for the children of God. Our love for God is intricately connected to our love for fellow believers. It is through our love for God that we express love for His children.

This love is not mere sentimentality but is demonstrated through obedience to His commandments. Obedience to God’s commandments is an act of love, showcasing our commitment to Him and our desire to live in alignment with His will. As we walk in obedience, we display the reality of God’s life working within us.

The Light Burden of Commandments

“For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome. For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.” 1 John 5:3-4 (NASB1995)

John clarifies that obeying God’s commandments is not always easy. However, the love we have for God and His love flowing through us make the burdensome commandments feel lighter. When our hearts are filled with love for God, obedience becomes a joyous response rather than a tedious obligation.

We are reminded of Jesus’ sacrificial love, enduring the cross for the sake of God’s children. In a similar way, our love for God empowers us to face challenges and overcome them. The joy set before us, the eternal rewards and fellowship with God, gives us the strength to persevere in obedience.

Overcoming the World through Faith

“For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.” 1 John 5:4 (NASB1995)

As children of God, we are not left to navigate the trials and temptations of this world on our own. Jesus, in His love for us, sent the someone to dwell within us. The indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit empowers us to overcome the world and its influences. Through faith, we are born again and made new creations. Our victory is not based on our own strength but on our trust in God’s promises and the transformative power of His Word. As we anchor our faith in God’s truth, we find the strength to stand firm in the face of adversity and to live victoriously.

Applying the Message

  1. Embrace genuine belief in Jesus as the Son of God and the Messiah. Place your trust in Him and acknowledge Him as the Lord of your life.

“that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9 (NASB1995)

  1. Cultivate love for God and others through obedience to His commandments. Seek to live a life that reflects your love for God, following His teachings and walking in His ways.

“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” John 14:15 (NASB1995)

  1. Develop an attitude of joy in obeying God, knowing that His love makes the burdens light. View obedience as an expression of your love for God rather than a chore, and allow His love to fill your heart and transform your perspective.

“For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome.” 1 John 5:3 (NASB1995)

  1. Nurture your faith by studying and applying the Word of God, enabling you to overcome the world’s challenges. Immerse yourself in the Scriptures, seeking to understand and apply God’s principles to your daily life. Meditate on His promises and allow His Word to shape your thoughts, actions, and decisions.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Psalm 119:105 (NASB1995)

In 1 John 5:1-4, John offers guidance and encouragement to believers, assuring them of their identity as God’s children. As we embrace our faith and live in obedience to God’s commandments, we find the strength and victory needed to navigate the world. Let us walk in the assurance that we are truly children of God, empowered by His love and grace. Through genuine belief, love, obedience, and faith, we can experience the joy of living as overcomers in Christ.
