“And the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, saying, ‘Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?’”
Luke 5:21 ESV

This is one of those moments in the Gospels where the enemies of Jesus accidentally say something true.

They are offended because Jesus speaks as if He has the right to forgive sins. In their minds, that belongs to God alone. And on that point, they are absolutely correct. Sin is first and foremost against God, so only God has the authority to remove its guilt.

That is what makes this scene so important. Jesus does not back away. He does not say, “You misunderstood Me.” He keeps going. He forgives the man, and then He heals him to show that His words were not empty. The miracle was not a magic trick. It was a visible sign that the Son of Man had divine authority.

That changes everything.

A prophet can tell you that God forgives. A priest can speak about sacrifice. A teacher can explain theology. But Jesus does not merely report forgiveness like a delivery driver dropping off somebody else’s package. He gives it in His own name.

That is a game changer.

Students especially need to see this clearly. It is easy to talk about Jesus as a wise moral teacher, a revolutionary, a spiritual guide, or a miracle worker with great branding. But if Luke 5 is true, those small categories break apart pretty fast. Jesus is more than helpful. He is holy. More than inspiring. He is divine.

And this is not just a doctrine for a theology quiz. It matters when your conscience is loud. It matters when shame sticks to you like smoke on a hoodie. If Jesus is truly God the Son, then His power to forgive is not symbolic, partial, or borrowed. It is real.

The same Jesus who forgave sinners in the Gospel still receives sinners now. He does not only improve lives. He pardons guilt. He does not only give guidance. He gives peace with God.

So do not settle for a small Jesus.

Come to Him as He really is. Trust Him not only to teach you, but to save you. The One who speaks forgiveness is the One who has every right to speak it.

Pray This

Lord Jesus, help me see You rightly and trust You fully. Keep me from shrinking You down into something smaller than You are. Thank You for having the authority to forgive my sins and bring me near to God. Amen.
