“But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him, and his righteousness to children’s children, to those who keep his covenant and remember to do his commandments.”
Psalm 103:17–18 ESV

Some things do not last very long. Bread goes stale. Shoes wear out. Even the strongest phone charger somehow starts acting like it needs prayer after a few months.

But the steadfast love of the Lord is not like that.

Psalm 103 says His love is “from everlasting to everlasting” on those who fear Him. That means God’s love is not running on a timer. It is not thin, shaky, or easily exhausted. He does not wake up one morning and decide He is done being faithful.

That is deeply comforting, especially for ordinary believers trying to walk with God in ordinary life. The verse also says His righteousness reaches to “children’s children.” That does not mean every family story is neat or painless. Scripture and life both make that clear. But it does mean that the faithfulness of God is bigger than one moment and wider than one lifetime.

I think about that in my own family. My mother and father were first-generation Christians. I am second. Now my children are third. When you stop and look at that, it becomes hard not to marvel. God’s love did not stop with one converted heart. It kept moving. It kept reaching. It kept showing mercy.

That is how covenant love works. God’s grace is never something we control, package, or pass down like an old watch in a drawer. But He really does work through generations. He delights to let the obedience, prayers, repentance, and worship of one generation become part of the spiritual inheritance of the next.

And all of this finds its center in Jesus Christ. He is the reason God’s mercy can reach sinners at all. He kept the covenant we broke. He obeyed where we failed. He shed His blood so that guilty people could be brought near and called the children of God. The love described in Psalm 103 is not vague kindness floating in the air. It comes to us through the saving work of Christ.

That means your faithfulness matters more than you think.

Every prayer whispered over your home matters. Every act of repentance matters. Every quiet decision to follow Jesus when nobody claps for it matters. You may feel like your obedience is small, but in the hands of God, small faithfulness can travel a long way.

So take heart. The Lord’s love is older than your fears and stronger than your failures. And by His grace, the good He is doing in your life may outlive you in beautiful ways.

Pray This

Lord, thank You that Your steadfast love does not fail and does not run out. Help me walk faithfully before You, and let Your mercy continue through my life and into the generations after me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
