“Jesus said to him, ‘Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’’”
Matthew 4:7 ESV
There is a difference between bringing God a hard question and putting Him on trial.
In Matthew 4, Satan tempts Jesus to force a dramatic display of divine protection. It sounds religious on the surface. After all, the temptation even comes dressed in Bible talk. But Jesus sees straight through it. He answers, “You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.”
That matters because not every spiritual question is innocent. Some questions are really demands wearing a trench coat.
There are appropriate challenges to present to God. We cry out for wisdom. We ask for help. We plead for mercy. We ask Him to show us truth. Scripture is full of people bringing honest burdens before the Lord. But testing God is something else. Testing says, “I will trust You only if You perform the way I want, when I want, under the conditions I set.”
That is not humble seeking. That is rebellion with a clipboard.
For skeptics especially, this can hit close to home. It is one thing to say, “Lord, help me understand.” It is another to say, “Unless You meet my standard of proof exactly as I demand, I will stand over You as judge.” The first posture is open-handed. The second keeps God in the witness chair.
Jesus refuses that path completely. He does not manipulate the Father into proving Himself. He trusts Him. He lives by the Word. He stands firm as the obedient Son.
And that is part of the good news for us. We often approach God with mixed motives, bruised trust, and conditions tucked in our back pocket. Jesus did not. He obeyed where we have been crooked. He trusted where we have been suspicious. Then He went to the cross for sinners who question badly, doubt deeply, and still need mercy.
So bring God your real questions. He is not fragile. But do not confuse unbelief with honesty. There is a kind of doubt that wants light, and there is a kind that just wants control.
Jesus calls us out of both pride and panic and into faith. Not blind faith. Not careless faith. Faith that bows before God’s Word and learns to trust the One who has already shown His character in Christ.
Pray This
Lord Jesus, keep me from proud unbelief and teach me to bring You honest questions with a humble heart. Help me trust Your Word and rest in who You are. Amen.
