“Then Samson went down to Timnah and saw a woman in Timnah, one of the daughters of the Philistines. So he came back and told his father and mother, ‘I saw a woman in Timnah, one of the daughters of the Philistines; now therefore, get her for me as a wife.’”
Judges 14:1–2 NASB1995
God gave us eyes to see the world He made. There’s a lot of beauty in it. But Scripture is honest—what we look at doesn’t just stay in our eyes. It moves into our heart.
Samson is a clear example of that. He saw a woman, and that was enough for him. He didn’t ask if it was wise. He didn’t pause to consider God’s direction. He just said, “Get her for me.” It sounds simple, but that moment reveals something deeper—his eyes were leading him more than God was.
Jesus later explains this plainly: the eye is like a lamp (Matthew 6:22–23). What we take in shapes what fills us. If we keep feeding our minds things that pull us away from God, it won’t stay neutral for long.
I’ve noticed this in my own life. Sometimes it starts small—just a glance, just scrolling, just watching something I know isn’t helping me. But it doesn’t stay small. It lingers. It nudges how I think. It pulls on what I want.
That’s how temptation works. As James says, desire grows if we keep feeding it (James 1:14–15).
Samson kept following what he saw, and it eventually cost him deeply. But even then, God didn’t walk away from him. When Samson lost his physical sight, he finally turned back to God—and saw more clearly than before.
That’s the grace of God. He doesn’t leave us stuck in our mistakes.
Through Jesus, we’re not left to figure this out on our own. He is the Light of the world (John 8:12), and He teaches us how to see again—not just with our eyes, but with our hearts.
So this isn’t just about avoiding bad things. It’s about choosing better things. Filling your life with what is true, pure, and life-giving.
What you look at matters more than you think. But the good news is, God helps you choose differently.
Stay close to Him, and your vision will start to change.
Pray This
Lord Jesus, help me guard what I look at. Teach me to choose what is good and pleasing to You. Fill my heart with Your truth and lead my desires in the right direction. Amen.
