“But I am the Lord your God, who rescued you from slavery in Egypt. And I will make you live in tents again, as you do each year at the Festival of Shelters.” Hosea 12:9 NLT

Most people do not like moving backward.

If someone finally buys a home after years of struggling, the last thing they want is to sleep in a tent. Yet God commanded Israel to do exactly that during the Festival of Shelters. For a few days each year, they would leave their comfortable homes and live in temporary shelters.

Why?

Because God did not want them to forget.

The tents reminded them that there was a time when they had no permanent home. They had been slaves in Egypt. They had wandered through the wilderness. Every roof over their heads, every field they harvested, and every blessing they enjoyed came from the hand of God.

The festival was not about discomfort. It was about remembrance.

Sometimes we need reminders too.

It is easy to become familiar with God’s blessings and forget God’s rescue. We can become so focused on today’s responsibilities that we lose sight of where the Lord found us. We forget the prayers He answered, the sins He forgave, and the burdens He carried.

Jesus gives us an even greater reason to remember.

He rescued us from the slavery of sin, not from Egypt but from a far deeper bondage. Through His death and resurrection, He brought us into God’s family and gave us a new identity.

Jesus also said, “I go to prepare a place for you” (John 14:2). One day, every believer will be home with Him forever.

But there is another beautiful truth. While Jesus prepares our eternal home, He has also prepared a place for His Spirit to dwell right now. Through faith in Christ, our bodies become the temple of the Holy Spirit. God does not merely lead us home someday; He lives with us today.

The next time you thank God for a blessing, pause and remember the rescue that came before it. Remember the wilderness. Remember the cross. Remember the grace that brought you this far.

The people of God have never simply been people with a destination. We are people with a Deliverer.

And He has not forgotten us.

Pray This

Father, thank You for rescuing me when I could not rescue myself. Forgive me for the times I forget Your grace and focus only on Your gifts. Help me remember where You brought me from and keep my heart grateful. Thank You for sending Jesus to save me and for giving me the Holy Spirit to dwell within me. Teach me to live each day with my eyes fixed on my eternal home in Christ. Amen.
