“If anyone continues to prophesy, his own father and mother will tell him, ‘You must die, for you have prophesied lies in the name of the Lord.’ And as he prophesies, his own father and mother will stab him.” Zechariah 13:3 NLT

Zechariah doesn’t soften the picture for us here.

The language is severe. A person’s own parents rise against him because he claims to speak for God while spreading lies. What are we supposed to do with a verse like that?

The point is not that Christians should literally imitate this action. Zechariah is describing a future day of cleansing when God’s people will hate falsehood so deeply that even the closest family relationships will not be allowed to excuse spiritual deception.

That is a sobering thought.

In our culture, truth is often treated like a personal preference. One person has “their truth” and another person has “their truth.” But Scripture presents truth differently. Truth belongs to God. We do not create it. We receive it.

False prophecy is especially serious because it puts words into God’s mouth that He never spoke. It takes divine authority and uses it for human purposes. Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly warns against those who claim, “The Lord says,” when the Lord has said nothing at all.

The good news is that Zechariah’s prophecy is part of a larger promise. Earlier in the chapter, God speaks about a fountain opened to cleanse His people from sin and impurity. The removal of lies happens alongside the cleansing of hearts.

That points us directly to Jesus Christ.

Jesus did not merely speak God’s truth. He is the Truth. He never exaggerated, manipulated, or misrepresented the Father. Every word He spoke was perfectly faithful. Where false prophets distort God’s voice, Jesus reveals it perfectly.

For believers today, the application is simple. Be careful about what you believe. Be careful about what you repeat. And be especially careful about claiming God’s authority for your own opinions.

The safest place for a Christian is not chasing the newest spiritual trend. It is remaining rooted in Scripture and following Jesus, the One who always tells the truth.

God is not looking for people with impressive spiritual claims. He is looking for people who faithfully listen to His Son.

Pray This

Lord Jesus, thank You for revealing the Father perfectly and speaking only what is true. Protect me from deception and give me a heart that loves Your Word. Help me test what I hear, walk in humility, and remain faithful to Your truth. Let my life reflect honesty, integrity, and obedience to You. Amen.
