“John was like a burning and shining lamp, and you were excited for a while about his message.” John 5:35 NLT

Not every spiritual high leads to a changed life.

Jesus spoke these words to religious people who had once been fascinated by John the Baptist. John was bold. He was different. Crowds gathered around him. People traveled long distances to hear him preach. For a season, he became the spiritual conversation everyone wanted to join.

In today’s language, John was trending.

But Jesus exposed a painful reality. Many who were excited about John never embraced the message John preached. They enjoyed the movement but rejected the repentance. They admired the messenger but ignored where he was pointing.

And where was John pointing?

To Jesus.

John repeatedly told people that he was not the Christ. He called people to turn from their sins and prepare their hearts for the coming Savior. His ministry was never about building a following for himself. It was about directing people to the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

The danger still exists today.

It is possible to enjoy Christian content, follow Christian personalities, attend Christian events, and be energized by spiritual conversations while keeping Jesus at arm’s length. We can become fans of the lamp and miss the Light.

A lamp has value because it points beyond itself. John burned brightly because God sent him to bear witness to Christ. The same is true of every faithful preacher, teacher, author, pastor, or ministry. Their purpose is not to gather attention for themselves but to direct attention to Jesus.

The question is not whether we are excited about spiritual things. The question is whether that excitement has led us to deeper repentance, greater obedience, and a closer walk with Christ.

Temporary enthusiasm fades. Genuine faith remains.

So today, look beyond the lamp. Fix your eyes on Jesus. He is not merely the subject of the message. He is the Savior the message is about.

Lord Jesus, keep me from settling for spiritual excitement without genuine faith. Help me hear Your voice above every other voice. Give me a heart that responds with repentance, obedience, and trust. Let my attention be fixed on You, not merely on those who speak about You. Draw me closer to Yourself today and teach me to follow You faithfully. Amen.
