“They went to the leading priests and elders and told them, ‘We have bound ourselves with an oath to eat nothing until we have killed Paul.’” Acts 23:14 NLT

It is easy to assume that people who oppose the gospel are only mildly interested in their cause. Acts 23 reminds us otherwise.

More than forty men had made a vow. They were so committed to stopping Paul that they swore not to eat until he was dead. This was not casual disagreement. This was determined opposition.

Never underestimate the commitment of those who oppose the gospel.

Throughout history, people have invested enormous amounts of time, energy, money, and influence trying to silence God’s truth. Sometimes opposition comes from governments. Sometimes from culture. Sometimes from religious people who have drifted from God’s Word. Sometimes it comes from people much closer to home.

Yet there is something remarkable about this story. For all their planning, plotting, and determination, they never succeeded.

God already knew about the conspiracy.

Before the assassins could act, God arranged for Paul’s nephew to overhear the plot. The information reached the authorities, and Paul was safely escorted away under heavy guard. The men who thought they controlled the situation discovered they were actually working within the boundaries of God’s sovereign rule.

The same truth comforts believers today.

We should not be naive about spiritual opposition. The enemy of our souls is real. The world often resists the message of Christ. There are people who passionately oppose biblical truth.

But there is a greater reality.

God is not surprised by any threat against His people. No scheme is hidden from Him. No obstacle can overturn His purposes. The gospel survived persecution in the first century, and it continues to advance today because it is God’s gospel, not ours.

Jesus Himself faced the fiercest opposition imaginable. Religious leaders plotted against Him. Crowds rejected Him. Soldiers crucified Him. Yet the cross was not a defeat. It was the very means God used to accomplish salvation.

When opposition seems strong, remember that God’s purposes are stronger.

Stay faithful. Keep speaking the truth. Keep following Christ. The same God who watched over Paul still reigns today.

Pray This

Father, help me not to be surprised when opposition comes. Give me courage to remain faithful to Jesus even when others resist Your truth. Remind me that no plan of man can overcome Your purposes. Strengthen my faith, guard my heart, and help me trust Your sovereign hand in every circumstance. In Jesus’ name, amen.
