“I was glad when they said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the LORD.’” Psalm 122:1 NASB1995
Good news has a way of making our hearts race.
Maybe you’ve been waiting for a phone call about a job that could change your financial future. Maybe you’ve nervously asked someone a life-changing question and are waiting for their answer. The waiting can feel endless. Then the news finally arrives, and suddenly everything changes.
David knew that feeling.
When someone said, “Let us go to the house of the LORD,” something came alive inside him. He wasn’t excited about a building. He wasn’t counting down the minutes until he could hear musicians sing or priests teach. What stirred his heart was the opportunity to encounter God.
David treasured God’s presence because those moments were precious. Under the Old Covenant, God’s people experienced His presence in ways that were often connected to specific places and acts of worship. The temple represented God’s dwelling among His people.
But something remarkable happened through Jesus.
Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus opened the way for something David could only anticipate from a distance. God no longer dwells in a temple made with stone. He dwells within His people.
Jesus told His disciples, “it is to your advantage that I go away” (John 16:7). That must have sounded impossible at the time. How could it be better for Jesus to leave?
Because He would send the Holy Spirit.
If you have trusted in Christ, the Spirit of God lives within you. The place where God’s presence dwells is no longer a building across town. It is the believer’s life.
You are the house of the Lord.
That doesn’t mean every day feels spiritually dramatic. Some days feel ordinary. Some days feel dry. Yet God’s promise does not depend on our feelings. Through Christ, God’s presence is nearer than our next breath.
David rejoiced when he was invited to go to God’s house. We have an even greater reason to rejoice. Because of Jesus, God’s house goes wherever His people go.
Today, take a moment to remember what an incredible gift that is. The God who created the universe has chosen to make His home with His people.
Pray This
Father, thank You for sending Your Son to make a way for me to know You. Thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit who lives within every believer. Help me to remember today that I never walk alone. Open my eyes to Your presence and teach me to enjoy fellowship with You in every part of life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
