“People who work hard sleep well, whether they eat little or much. But the rich seldom get a good night’s sleep.” Ecclesiastes 5:12 NLT

Most people assume that having more money would solve most of their problems.

Solomon knew better.

Ecclesiastes was written from the perspective of a man who had experienced wealth, power, influence, and opportunity beyond what most people could imagine. He wasn’t guessing about the burdens of prosperity. He lived them.

That is why his observation is so striking. The laborer who works hard often lays his head down at night and sleeps peacefully. The wealthy man, on the other hand, may spend the night worrying about investments, losses, responsibilities, competitors, taxes, employees, markets, and a hundred other concerns that come with managing abundance.

We often hear the phrase, “More money, more problems.” While it sounds like a modern cliché, Solomon recognized the principle thousands of years ago.

The poor man may look at the rich man and think, “If only I had what he has.” The rich man may look back and remember a simpler season when life felt less complicated.

The wisdom of Ecclesiastes reminds us that God created a complex world, but He calls His people to live with a simple trust in Him. The goal of life is not accumulating enough possessions to finally feel secure. The goal is learning to rest in the God who already holds our lives in His hands.

Money is a useful servant, but it makes a terrible savior.

Jesus came to free us from the exhausting burden of finding our identity, peace, and security in what we own. He invites us to bring our worries to Him and find rest for our souls. The deepest sleep does not come from a large bank account. It comes from a settled heart that trusts its Father.

Tonight, before your head touches the pillow, remember that God is still in control. The accounts may rise or fall. Opportunities may come or go. But Christ remains the same, and that is enough.

Pray This

Father, thank You for providing what I need today. Guard my heart from believing that more possessions will bring lasting peace. Teach me to be content with Your gifts and to trust You with every concern that keeps me awake at night. Help me find my security in Christ and rest in Your faithful care. Amen.
