“They remained standing in place for three hours while the Book of the Law of the Lord their God was read aloud to them. Then for three more hours they confessed their sins and worshiped the Lord their God.” Nehemiah 9:3 NLT
One detail in this verse is easy to miss. The people spent three hours listening to God’s Word and then three hours confessing their sins and worshiping. It seems they confessed as much as they heard.
Imagine listening to God’s commands, His promises, His warnings, and His holiness for three straight hours. As passage after passage was read, memories would surface. Convictions would deepen. Someone might remember a neglected command. Another might realize a selfish attitude. A leader might recognize pride. A parent might see failure. The Word was shining light into places they had ignored for years.
Their confession was not a religious performance. It was a response to what God had revealed.
Many Christians wonder if they need to spend long periods verbally listing every sin they have ever committed. The New Testament points us in a different direction. We are invited to confess our sins honestly before God, but we do so knowing that Christ has already paid for them. Confession is not an attempt to convince God to forgive us. It is agreeing with God about what He has shown us.
In a sense, we still confess as much as we hear.
As we read Scripture, the Holy Spirit brings specific things to our attention. Maybe it is an unforgiving spirit. Maybe it is anxiety that has crowded out trust. Maybe it is pride disguised as independence. We confess what God reveals, and we thank Him that Christ has already provided cleansing through His cross.
Notice that confession and worship were connected. The people did not stay trapped in guilt. Their confession led them into worship. That is what happens when repentance is joined to grace. We stop looking at ourselves and start looking at the God who forgives.
So the next time you open your Bible, do more than gather information. Listen carefully. Let God’s Word search your heart. Then respond honestly, confessing what He reveals and worshiping the Savior who has already made a way for you to be clean.
Pray This
Father, thank You for speaking through Your Word. Give me a humble heart that responds honestly when You reveal sin in my life. Help me not to hide, excuse, or ignore what You show me. Thank You that Jesus has paid for my sins completely. Lead me from conviction to worship, and help me walk in the freedom of Your grace. In Jesus’ name, amen.
