“Write this letter to the angel of the church in Philadelphia. This is the message from the one who is holy and true, the one who has the key of David. What he opens, no one can close; and what he closes, no one can open:” Revelation 3:7 NLT
Few things are more unsettling than not knowing if you’re making the right move.
You pray. You think it through. You try to be wise. And still, there’s that quiet question in the back of your mind—what if I’m wrong?
Jesus speaks right into that tension.
He doesn’t introduce Himself here as a helper or a guide. He calls Himself the One who is holy and true… the one who has the key of David. In other words, He’s not guessing about your life. He’s not reacting. He’s in charge.
“What He opens, no one can close; and what He closes, no one can open.”
That’s not just poetic language. That’s authority.
We often live as if doors depend on our effort, our timing, or our ability to figure everything out. But Jesus gently shifts that perspective. The outcome isn’t resting on your shoulders the way you think it is.
What He opens will stand.
What He closes will stay shut.
And here’s where that becomes incredibly encouraging—if you are seeking Him, walking with Him, and desiring His will, you don’t have to live paralyzed by fear of getting it wrong.
He is able to redirect you.
He is able to shut what needs shutting.
He is able to open what no one else can touch.
That means your confidence isn’t in perfect decision-making. It’s in a powerful Savior.
Think about that for a moment. The same Jesus who holds authority over salvation, over kings, over eternity—He’s the One managing the doors in your life.
So when something doesn’t work out the way you hoped, it’s not always a failure. Sometimes it’s a closed door that was never meant for you.
And when something opens unexpectedly, even when it doesn’t make perfect sense yet, it may just be Him making a way.
This doesn’t remove responsibility—we still seek Him, pray, and walk in obedience. But it does remove the pressure of thinking everything rises and falls on us.
Jesus is not distant from your decisions. He is actively ruling over them.
And that changes how you walk forward.
Not with anxiety.
But with trust.
Pray This
Lord Jesus, You are holy and true, and You hold the keys to every door in my life. Help me trust You when I don’t understand what’s opening or closing. Give me peace to follow You without fear, knowing You are in control. Lead me in Your will and strengthen my confidence in You. Amen.
