“Even if they hide at the very top of Mount Carmel, I will search them out and capture them. Even if they hide at the bottom of the ocean, I will send the sea serpent after them to bite them.”

Children sometimes think that if they close their eyes, nobody can see them. Adults are often more sophisticated, but not necessarily different. We hide behind excuses, distractions, accomplishments, or carefully crafted appearances, hoping our sins, motives, and compromises will remain unseen.

Through the prophet Amos, God speaks to a rebellious people who believed they could escape accountability. His language is vivid and unforgettable. If they climb to the highest mountain, He will find them. If they descend to the depths of the sea, He will find them there as well. The point is clear: there is no place beyond God’s reach.

This verse reminds us that God is committed to justice. In a world where evil often seems to prosper and wrongdoers sometimes appear untouchable, it can be tempting to wonder if justice will ever come. Amos answers that question with a resounding yes. God sees what others miss. He knows what is hidden. Nothing escapes His attention.

That truth can be unsettling if we are trying to hide from Him.

But for believers, it is also deeply comforting.

The God who sees every act of wickedness also sees every tear, every injustice, every prayer whispered in the dark, and every wound that others overlook. His justice is not blind. It is perfect.

The greatest display of that justice was not in the destruction of sinners but in the sacrifice of His Son. At the cross, God’s justice and mercy met. Jesus took the judgment that guilty people deserved so that those who trust Him could be forgiven and reconciled to God.

The answer is not to hide from God. The answer is to run to Him.

You may be able to fool people. You may even be able to silence your own conscience for a season. But you cannot outrun God. Thankfully, because of Jesus Christ, the One who sees everything is also the One who welcomes repentant sinners with open arms.

Come into the light. There is mercy there.

Father, thank You that nothing escapes Your sight. You are perfectly just and completely holy. Forgive me for the times I try to hide my sin instead of confessing it. Thank You that Jesus bore the judgment I deserved and opened the way for me to be reconciled to You. Help me walk in the light, trust Your justice, and rest in Your mercy today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
