Bitter Sweet
Did you know that over 80% of people in the United States claim to be depressed? Did you know that annually, there are over 118 million prescriptions filled out for anti-depressants? In this land of plenty, this richest nation in the history of the world, it is inconceivable to think that people are not happy.
As you look around, the suicide rate is rising, anger management classes are piling up in droves, and everyone is looking to get high. All around us beloved, is an unhappy world. These same people, who have the world, are loosing their souls. Yet, everything around them is bitter; not able to entertain them for over fifteen minutes. Children spend countless hours wanting things, along with parents who join them; while each maxes out there credit cards (oh yeah, I’m not oblivious to children being in debt because mom and dad maxed out their own).
Beloved, these people are so thirsty that they’re drinking the sand. And you sit there idly by thinking to yourself, “what can I do?” Brothers, sisters, we have living water that flows eternally. We have found contentment on Calvary. Our sin debt is paid and we are truly free; not being servants to anyone, but the cross. And what a light and joyful burden that is to carry. Give them the gospel. Feed them the bread of life. Though it might be bitter to them at first, they will see it is the sweetest thing they’ve ever truly tasted.
