“My son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.”
Proverbs 23:15 KJV
There is a special kind of joy that belongs to a parent. It is deeper than pride and sturdier than a passing happy moment. Proverbs 23:15 puts its finger right on it: “My son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.”
Notice where the verse places the focus. Not first on achievement. Not on talent. Not on reputation. It goes straight to the heart. “If thine heart be wise.” That matters because a child can learn how to perform well in public and still be foolish in private. They can know how to smile, answer politely, and look put together while their heart is drifting. But when wisdom reaches the heart, something real is happening.
This is why godly parents care about more than behavior management. We are not just trying to raise children who know how to act right when people are watching. We long to see something deeper: a heart that listens, receives correction, fears the Lord, and begins to love what is good. That kind of wisdom brings joy that no report card can compete with.
Of course, every parent knows this joy is mixed with groaning, prayer, and more repeated conversations than we ever imagined. Parenting can feel a little like giving the same sermon in different outfits. Yet this verse reminds us that the work is worth it. When wisdom begins to take root in a child, even in small signs, a parent’s heart rejoices.
And this joy is not about control. It is about grace. Parents can teach, correct, encourage, and model truth, but only God can give a wise heart. That keeps us humble. It also keeps us hopeful. The same Lord who commands us to train up our children is the Lord who is able to work in them far beyond our best words and weakest efforts.
This verse also points us to Christ. Jesus is not only a good moral example for our children. He is wisdom itself. To grow in wisdom is, ultimately, to be brought near to Him. So when a child begins to walk in truth, receive instruction, and love what is right, that is more than good parenting paying off. It is evidence of God’s mercy at work.
Parents, do not despise the slow work. Keep speaking truth. Keep praying. Keep correcting with love. Keep pointing your children to Jesus. The sweetest joy is not simply that our children succeed, but that their hearts grow wise in the Lord.
Pray This
Lord, give me grace to parent with wisdom, patience, and faith. Help me aim for my child’s heart and point them to Jesus in all things. Amen.
