Why Not Let It Go?

Inside of us is something that wants things to be fair.

If someone owes us—money, respect, an apology—we feel it. And if we’re honest, we don’t just want justice… we want things made right in our favor.

But Paul says something that almost feels backwards: Why not just accept the wrong? Why not let yourself be cheated?

He’s talking about believers taking each other to court, letting outsiders settle what should’ve been handled within the family of God. And instead of offering a strategy to win, he offers something deeper—something harder.

Let it go.

That doesn’t mean pretending it didn’t happen. It means choosing the relationship over the repayment. Choosing unity over being right.

And that hits close when we think about forgiveness.

We’re comfortable praying, “Forgive us our debts.” We need that. We depend on it. But the next line—“as we forgive our debtors”—that’s where things get a little tight.

Because forgiving someone who owes us feels like losing.

Unless we look at Jesus.

He didn’t demand what He was owed. He didn’t insist on fairness. On the cross, He absorbed the debt we could never repay. What looked like loss was actually victory—the kind that restores people, not just balances accounts.

So when someone wrongs you, the question isn’t always, “How do I get this back?”

Sometimes it’s, “What would it look like to protect this relationship instead?”

Not every situation is simple. Not every relationship is safe or wise to restore the same way. But in the everyday tensions—the overlooked words, the small offenses, the unmet expectations—there’s an invitation here.

You don’t always have to win.

Sometimes the greater strength is in letting go.

And in that moment, you look a lot like Jesus.

Lord Jesus, You forgave me when I had nothing to offer. Help me release what others owe me and trust You with the outcome. Teach me to value people the way You do. Amen.
