“And the Lord commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the Lord our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as it is at this day.”
Deuteronomy 6:24 KJV

When someone is struggling with obedience, it is easy for God’s commands to feel heavy. They can seem like fences, interruptions, or unwelcome limits. In a hard moment, the heart can quietly say, “Why does God have to make this so difficult?”

But Deuteronomy 6:24 gives a very different picture. God says His commands are for our good always. Not sometimes. Not only when we understand them. Not only when they feel inspiring. For our good always.

That means even the command you are resisting may carry more mercy than you realize.

A parent telling a child not to run into the street is not trying to ruin the child’s freedom. He is protecting the child’s life. The child may feel frustrated, but the command is wrapped in love. In a similar way, God’s statutes are not cold rules dropped from heaven by a distant authority. They are wise words from a Father who sees farther than we do.

This verse also says these commands were given that he might preserve us alive. God is not careless with human life. He knows how quickly sin burns through what it promises to bless. What looks exciting at first can leave smoke in the living room, figuratively speaking. The Lord’s commands often stand between us and damage we are too short-sighted to notice.

That does not mean obedience is always easy. Sometimes it feels costly. Sometimes it means saying no to what your flesh wants, your emotions justify, or your circumstances seem to invite. But difficulty is not proof that God is unkind. Very often, the opposite is true. The hard command may be the loving one.

And this is where we must look to Jesus. He did not treat the Father’s will as a burden to escape, but as the path He came to fulfill. Christ obeyed perfectly where we have resisted, delayed, negotiated, and excused. He obeyed all the way to the cross for sinners like us. So when you struggle to obey, you are not being sent back to try harder on your own. You are being called to trust the One who obeyed in your place and now leads you by grace.

In Christ, obedience is no longer a desperate attempt to earn God’s favor. It becomes the grateful response of someone who has already been loved, rescued, and brought near.

So if obedience feels difficult today, do not start by assuming God is against you. Start by remembering His heart. His commands are for your good. His warnings are merciful. His ways preserve life. And the Savior who calls you to obey is the same Savior who strengthens you to do it.

What God commands, He never commands as your enemy.

Pray This

Father, help me trust Your heart when obedience feels hard. Keep me from treating Your commands like burdens when they are really gifts of wisdom and protection. Thank You for sending Jesus, who obeyed perfectly in my place and now leads me in grace. Teach me to walk in Your ways with humility, faith, and love. Amen.
