Hold On to What You Have

Many Christians enjoy learning. New sermon series. New books. New theological discussions. New insights from Scripture. There is nothing wrong with growing in knowledge. In fact, we should never stop learning God’s Word.

But sometimes we can become so interested in discovering something new that we neglect what we already know.

The church in Thyatira faced a similar problem. False teachers were offering what appeared to be deeper spiritual understanding. They promised hidden knowledge and greater insights. Yet Jesus did not tell the faithful believers to chase after these deeper teachings.

Instead, He gave them a remarkably simple command:

“Hold tightly to what you have until I come.”

Notice what Jesus did not say. He did not tell them to uncover secret mysteries. He did not tell them to find a more advanced spiritual path. He did not tell them they were missing some hidden key to Christian growth.

He told them to hold on.

Sometimes the greatest act of faith is not learning something new. It is continuing to obey what God has already made clear.

Most believers already know far more truth than they consistently practice.

We know we should pray.

We know we should forgive.

We know we should love our neighbors.

We know we should share the gospel.

We know we should trust Christ.

The challenge is often not a lack of knowledge but a lack of perseverance.

A toolbox full of shiny new tools is not very useful if none of them are ever picked up and used. In the same way, spiritual knowledge that never turns into faithful action does little to advance Christ’s mission.

Jesus is not impressed by how many theological facts we can collect. He is pleased when His truth takes root in our lives and produces obedience, love, endurance, and service.

The believers in Thyatira were called to remain faithful in the middle of confusion and pressure. We are called to do the same. Rather than constantly asking, “What is the next thing I need to learn?” perhaps we should sometimes ask, “Am I living out what Jesus has already taught me?”

When Christ returns, He will not be looking for people who chased every spiritual trend. He will be looking for people who held tightly to Him.

And that is enough.

Father, thank You for the truth You have already revealed through Your Word and through Your Son. Forgive me for the times I have chased new ideas while neglecting simple obedience. Help me remain faithful to what You have taught me. Give me endurance to follow Christ, serve others, and stay focused on Your mission until He returns. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
