Is It Secret? Is It Safe?

“Now all glory to God, who is able to make you strong, just as my Good News says. This message about Jesus Christ has revealed his plan for you Gentiles, a plan kept secret from the beginning of time.”
Romans 16:25 NLT

One of the great moments in The Lord of the Rings is when Gandalf suddenly turns serious and asks Frodo about the Ring: “Is it secret? Is it safe?”

The entire story changes around that question.

Because hidden things are powerful in Tolkien’s world. Ancient plans. Forgotten kings. Long-hidden enemies. Prophecies buried under dust and time. What looks like a quiet little life in the Shire is actually sitting inside a much larger story that has been unfolding for ages.

Romans 16 feels a little like that.

Paul says God had a plan hidden from the beginning of time. A mystery. Not because God forgot to tell people, but because the world was not yet ready to see the full glory of it.

Then Jesus came.

Suddenly the hidden story stepped into the light.

The true King arrived, though many did not recognize Him. The One promised long ago walked among ordinary people. Fishermen. Tax collectors. Outsiders. Gentiles. Weak people. Sinful people.

People like us.

In The Lord of the Rings, the Ring whispers power but slowly destroys everyone who trusts it. Jesus does the opposite. He carries the burden Himself in order to save those who could never carry it alone.

That is the mystery Paul is celebrating here.

God’s rescue plan was never about human strength. It was never about gathering the strongest warriors of Middle-earth together and hoping evil loses. It was always about God revealing His Son.

And Paul says this revealed Gospel is what makes believers strong.

Not secretly strong in the way the world talks about strength. Not untouchable. Not fearless all the time.

But steady.

Like Frodo continuing one more step toward Mordor when his strength is almost gone. Like Sam carrying his friend when he cannot walk anymore. The Christian life often feels less like winning a parade and more like climbing a dark mountain while holding onto promises.

And this is where the Gospel becomes such good news.

The secret is no longer hidden.

The King has revealed Himself.

Jesus Christ has stepped into the darkness, defeated sin and death, and secured victory through the cross and resurrection. There is no shadow in your life deeper than His authority. No weakness stronger than His grace.

So when your heart feels tired or surrounded by darkness, remember Gandalf’s question.
