When most people hear the word “lending,” they think of banks, interest rates, and monthly payments. In the Bible, however, lending was often something very different.

God instructed His people to help those in need without taking advantage of them. If a neighbor had fallen into hardship, lending was meant to be an act of mercy. The goal was not profit. The goal was compassion.

Psalm 112 describes a person who fears the Lord and walks in His ways. One of the characteristics of that person is generosity. They are willing to use what God has given them to bless others. At the same time, they conduct their affairs fairly and honestly. Their kindness is balanced with integrity.

This kind of generosity can feel uncomfortable in a world that constantly asks, “What’s in it for me?” We naturally want guarantees, repayment, or some return on our investment. Yet Jesus often pointed His followers in the opposite direction. He taught them to give freely, to lend without expecting anything back, and to trust their heavenly Father to provide what they needed (Luke 6:34-35).

Think about how Jesus has treated us. We came to Him spiritually bankrupt, unable to repay our debt of sin. He did not offer grace with interest attached. He gave Himself freely. The cross is the ultimate picture of generosity. We receive forgiveness, mercy, and eternal life, not because we earned them, but because Jesus was willing to give.

That doesn’t mean wisdom disappears. Psalm 112 also mentions conducting business fairly. God is not calling us to be reckless. He is calling us to be generous, honest, and compassionate people whose hearts are not controlled by money.

An open hand reveals an open heart. When we loosen our grip on our possessions, we make room to reflect the generosity of Christ.

Today, ask God to show you someone you can bless. It may not involve money at all. It might be a meal, a ride, an hour of your time, a listening ear, or practical help. Every act of generosity becomes a small reflection of the Savior who gave everything for us.

Father, thank You for Your incredible generosity toward me through Jesus Christ. Forgive me for the times I have held too tightly to what You have entrusted to me. Give me a heart that is compassionate, wise, and willing to help those in need. Teach me to trust Your provision so that I can give freely and serve joyfully. Let my life reflect the kindness and grace I have received from Christ. Amen.
