The Danger of Almost Right

Eliphaz was convinced he had heard from God.

He describes a mysterious experience, a whispered revelation that came to him in the night. Reading his words, we can tell he was sincere. He wasn’t trying to deceive Job. He wasn’t a fraud looking for attention. He genuinely believed he understood what God was doing.

The problem was that sincerity and accuracy are not the same thing.

Throughout his speeches, Eliphaz assumes Job’s suffering must be the result of hidden sin. Some of his statements sound wise. Some contain elements of truth. Yet when the book concludes, God tells Eliphaz and his friends, “you have not spoken of Me what is right” (Job 42:7).

That is a sobering thought.

A person can have a real spiritual experience, draw the wrong conclusion, and then speak confidently about something God never said.

Sometimes we imagine only two categories: true prophets and false prophets. But Scripture shows another possibility. A person may have good intentions, possess some genuine insight, and still miss the target. Eliphaz fired volley after volley of explanations at Job. He thought he understood the situation. He thought he was defending God’s justice. Yet he spoke without the accuracy that God’s character deserves.

This should make all of us humble.

Not every strong impression is a message from God. Not every emotional experience is divine revelation. Not every confident voice is a correct voice.

The answer is not skepticism toward everything spiritual. God does guide His people. The answer is humility. We must continually test our thoughts, impressions, and conclusions against God’s Word.

Jesus shows us what perfect truth looks like. Unlike Eliphaz, Christ never misrepresented the Father. He could say, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father” (John 14:9). Where human wisdom can miss the mark, Jesus reveals God perfectly.

The next time you feel certain about what God is doing in someone else’s life, pause for a moment. Listen carefully. Search the Scriptures. Hold your conclusions with humility.

God is not merely looking for passionate voices. He is looking for faithful ones.

Father, give me a humble heart that is eager to learn and slow to assume. Protect me from speaking beyond what You have revealed. Help me test every thought, impression, and opinion by Your Word. Thank You for Jesus, who perfectly reveals Your character and truth. Teach me to walk in wisdom, humility, and faithfulness today. Amen.
