“To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what little understanding they have will be taken away from them.”

Some things in life do not stay neutral when ignored.

A garden does not politely pause until you feel motivated again. A bank account does not say, “No worries, we’ll pretend those expenses never happened.” And the check engine light, that tiny glowing prophet on the dashboard, rarely disappears because you decided to emotionally support it from a distance.

Jesus gives us a similar warning about our response to His Word. When we listen to His teaching, more understanding is given. But when we refuse to listen, even the little understanding we have can be taken away.

That is sobering.

Jesus is not describing a cruel God who snatches truth away from sincere seekers. He is warning us that ignored truth hardens the heart. When God speaks and we shrug, delay, excuse, or distract ourselves, something happens inside us. The Word that once felt sharp can begin to feel dull. Conviction that once moved us can become background noise. We do not simply “stay where we are.” Spiritually speaking, neglect has negative returns.

This is why hearing the Word of God is never just about gathering more information. Bible knowledge is not meant to sit on a shelf like a trophy from Sunday school. God gives light so we can walk in it.

James says, “But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says” (James 1:22 NLT). Listening that never becomes obedience eventually becomes self-deception. We can nod at truth and still drift from it. We can agree with Jesus and still avoid following Him in the very place He is calling us to surrender.

But here is the mercy in the warning: Jesus is still speaking.

He is still teaching. Still inviting. Still giving understanding to those who come with open ears and humble hearts. The same Savior who warns us about losing what we neglect also gives grace to those who turn back and say, “Lord, help me listen.”

So do not despise the small conviction God has already given you. Do not wait for a louder word while ignoring the clear one already in front of you.

Respond today.

Forgive the person. Put away the sin. Open the Bible. Make the call. Pray honestly. Take the next obedient step.

The more we listen to Christ, the more we learn to recognize His voice. And by His grace, what begins as a small act of obedience can become a deeper life of understanding, wisdom, and joy in Him.

Lord Jesus, give me ears to truly hear You. Forgive me for the times I have treated Your Word lightly or delayed obedience when You were clearly leading me. Soften my heart again. Help me not only understand Your truth, but walk in it. Give me grace to respond today with faith, humility, and love. Amen.
