Human Comfort

Human Comfort

Friends can sometimes think they know you. But sometimes, they really only know who you were, not who you are. King David’s closest attendants thought they knew David well. They saw their king, old and shivering. No amount of blankets would get him warm, so they had an idea, “Let’s get King David a young woman to keep him warm.” They knew that King David had a fondness for women (that’s putting it gently).

They brought to him Human Comfort, her name was Abishag. She was young and warm and she was to be David’s final comfort.

David responded to his past failings with a change. The Bible makes it clear that though they brought Abishag to David to provide him with sexual comfort, he did not take that comfort.

David learned that true satisfaction can only come from the Lord. He had sought comfort in women and he came from the experiences empty. He sought comfot in family and they let him down time and time again. In fact, his family fell apart. He even sought comfort in his own strength and vitality. Though he achieved success by his own hands, he now trusted more on the strength of God, than his own.

In our lives, there are times when we substitute the comfort that can only come from God with human comfort. Only Jesus Christ can give you a peace that surpasses all understanding. Only He can give you true and lasting success in your family, career and community. Godly comfort warms the soul and David knew this well. It had take David many years and plenty of tears to learn that only God can warm the soul.

Do you have a sorrow, pain, illness or spiritual discomfort? You will find that human comfort fades quickly. Jesus can give you the comfort you are looking for. His love can comfort your soul and body.

Receive His love and seek out the comfort that only He can give, “And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12.
